The Department of Defense is using Marshall BioResources’ Göttingen minipigs in chemical defense research. In this 2024 U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense study, 11 male Göttingen minipigs from Marshall BioResources are used to test treatments for nerve agent poisoning. The pigs remain conscious during the testing. The Göttingen minipig is being developed as a replacement for nonhuman primates in this area of chemical defense research.
