Whistleblower Reports

A former employee of MBR’s North Rose facility shared photos and information in 2024

  • The slightest physical “imperfection” becomes a death sentence. A puppy with different-colored eyes was killed at birth, as this made him “useless” for the customers’ requirements.
  • Puppies would routinely die overnight
  • Blood was often found in cages due to foot injuries from wire cages
  • Cages were only properly cleaned once every 2 weeks
  • Dead animals were disposed of with an on site incinerator.
  • Animals are often sold for toxicology research.
    • Example: Eight-month-old beagle puppies from Marshall BioResources were used in a cannabis experiment. Every day for 52-56 weeks, they had a tube forced down their throats and into their stomachs so that experimenters could pump them full of cannabis extract. Seven of the puppies died before the end of the experiment; one died only two weeks into the experiment. Examinations determined that they died following “reflux and aspiration of stomach contents and/or formulated treatment into the lungs rather than a drug-related effect.”

USDA/APHIS Reports

  • “Attending veterinarian and adequate veterinary care (dealers and exhibitors). A kitten, id #M232577, was noted missing ½ of his tail on 26March23. According to the medical record, the facility staff failed to handle the injury as described in the SOP or contact the veterinarian.

The kitten was euthanized that same day and the disposition record stated that the tail was injured and was healing but had been chewed to the bone by the other kittens in the enclosure” report May 15 2023
  • “A dog id # 0204422 had an injury to the left rear hock that had been present more than a day and was not identified by the staff during daily observations. A dog id # 0205118 had a growth observed on the left side of the chest that had been present for more than a day and was not identified by the staff during daily observations. A dog id # 3703348 was missing a toe nail on the left front paw. There was a small hole and the area was reddened in color. This did not appear to be a recent injury, there was no treatment card identifying that the dog had been treated or noted during daily observations. A dog # 0166333 had a small puncture wound affecting her left mammary gland. This did not appear to be a recent injury” report Aug 26 2021
  • “Housing facilities, general: Several enclosures housing multiple felines (123202, 123505, 123605, 123602, 123405) are not being spot cleaned daily and there is an accumulation of litter and feces on the hard surfaces of the enclosure” report April 04 2022
  • “ In building 35 multiple enclosures housing hound type dogs has mesh floor that is dirty with a layer of grime and fecal debris. Several of the dogs are soiled along their feet and legs from the excess debris. These enclosures need to be cleaned more frequently to prevent this from occurring and for the cleanliness of the dogs” report July 26 2016
  • “A large amount of flies was present in buildings 24, 36, 45, 47, and 74. Several of these building were older and had puppies with wet food present which was an additional attractant to the flies. Although there was evidence of fly strips the current method is not effective enough to reduce contamination of pests in these buildings. This needs to be addressed and additional methods implemented to reduce pests in the area.” report July 21 2015
  • “Primary enclosures. In Building 15, Pens # 15-319 and 15-412 had floors with openings that allowed puppies feet to pass through the slotted flooring. When feet can fall through the flooring, there is a potential for injury to occur. Flooring in enclosures must be constructed so that they do not allow dogs/puppies feet to pass though any openings for their safety. This is a 1st Re-License Inspection for a Class “A” license. The inspection and exit briefing were conducted with the Applicant. All items must be in compliance within (2 ) more inspection(s) or by May 21, 2024 or the applicant will forfeit the license fee and must wait 6 months to reapply. Please contact your inspector to schedule your next Re-License Inspection. Regulated activity can continue under your existing USDA license until it expires.” Report March 26 2024

To Do

  • Look into 990-PF tax forms
  • Read through for advice on running pressure campaigns.
  • Learn what charges have been filed

A yard sign calling out the Attorney General to enforce law regarding the AWA violations
  • Find the legal statutes that we believe MBR is violating
  • Draft a letter to the DA with details above

    • What kind of violations would be required to shut it down?
    • Are unannounced inspections possible?
    • Can the footage of investigations be made public?
    • Who has power to demand an unannounced inspection?
  • Submit a FOI request to APHIS for:
    • Proof and history of violations of the AWA
    • Warnings and citations of violating the AWA
    • Why do the annual reports and inspection reports say there are different numbers of animals on the property? Both of these numbers are far different than other sources
      What are the proper counts?
      (See below for some evidence)
  • What organizations does MBR purchase from? Can we apply pressure to any shipping/logistics companies?
